That map wasn't a one-off. Across 138 Charlotte companies, Google showed most of them only close to home.

We ran 7,056 Google Maps searches around 138 HVAC, plumbing, pest control and garage door companies, counted the results by where people actually live, and asked ChatGPT, Gemini and Google's AI Overviews who to call about 53 of them.

  1. 70% → 1%of residents see a typical company in Google’s top 3: near its shop vs. 6.7 miles out
  2. 99%of #1 results had a Google category matching the trade searched
  3. 27 of 53companies were named by ChatGPT. Google’s AI Overviews named 2
Finding 01

Visibility drops sharply about three miles from the shop.

Near its own shop, a typical company shows up in Google’s top 3 for 70% of residents. At 3.3 miles that drops to 25%, and at 6.7 miles to about 1%. Beyond its own neighborhood, the typical company reaches the top 3 for 3% of the people within 10 miles.

HVAC falls off first. It’s the most crowded trade: a typical HVAC company’s 49-point scan turned up 241 competing businesses.

Close to home, winners share the right category, a 4.5+ rating and enough reviews.

99% of #1 results had a primary Google category matching the trade searched, and 93% of top-3 results were rated 4.5 stars or higher.

Reviews mattered up to a point. Companies with under 50 held a median of zero top-3 spots. Past about 150, more reviews showed no link to how far a company reached, and about one in five #1 spots went to a business with fewer than 50 reviews close to the searcher.

AI assistants follow different rules, and leave about half of companies out.

ChatGPT named 27 of 53 companies we checked and Gemini named 31. Google’s AI Overviews named 2, and returned sources in only 16 of the 53 checks. Gemini handed 31% of its HVAC recommendations to five companies.

Every ChatGPT check cited Thumbtack, Angi and HomeAdvisor among its sources, and 98% cited the Better Business Bureau. 45% of US consumers in BrightLocal’s 2026 survey said they used ChatGPT or other AI tools for local recommendations, up from 6% the year before.BrightLocal

How we ran the study

138 Charlotte-area companies (144 company-and-search scans) on 7 × 7 grids with a 10-mile radius, run October 15, 2026, for “hvac repair,” “plumber,” “pest control” and “garage door repair.” Each grid point is weighted by the residents living around it, using 2020 Census block groups. AI checks covered 53 of the companies, one run per assistant across 9 points. 57% of the scans are HVAC, so trade figures outside HVAC have wide margins. Rank and AI-answer data collected with Local Falcon. Full method and limitations.

Trade programs · included in every Growth Program

A program built around how your trade makes money.

Each trade makes its money in a different place. For HVAC it’s the replacement. Plumbers live on the late-night emergency call, and pest control on how many stops fit one route. Garage door companies first have to get found ahead of fake listings. Your Growth Program includes the one built for your trade, reported in the jobs that trade cares about.

Why Isoline

The playbook big operators use, sized for owner-run trades

Isoline Growth was founded by Neil, who has run marketing and growth at Allstate and Liberty Mutual, both Fortune 100 companies, and in pharma. He has managed close to $1 billion in advertising, carried a $1.5 billion P&L, and built the tracking that showed thousands of locally owned Allstate agencies which leads turned into sales.

Advising a PE-backed national home services company, he saw the gap up close. The big operators had data teams, call tracking and agencies on retainer. The owner-run companies competing with them on the same streets mostly didn’t. Isoline brings that playbook to independent HVAC, plumbing, pest control and garage door companies, sized and priced for them.

Neil leads every account and joins your monthly results call.

Three things we do differently

01Built for your trade

Each trade gets its own program: replacements in HVAC, the late-night call in plumbing, route density in pest control, fake listings in garage door.

02Research and AI behind every decision

We run our own scans and publish what we find, like The Three-Mile Map. AI handles the analysis and routine work, so your fee goes to senior judgment.

03Judged on booked jobs

Call tracking goes in during the first 30 days. Every month you see calls, booked jobs and cost per booked job by source, from your own ServiceTitan or Housecall Pro data.

Questions owners ask

Before you call

Do you sell leads?

No. The calls come to your own listing, website and phone number, and nobody else gets them. We charge a flat monthly fee, not per lead.

How long is the contract?

The Growth Program starts with a 90-day first term, because tracking and fixes need about a quarter to show up in booked jobs. We walk through the full terms on a call before anything is signed.

Who does the work?

Neil, our founder, leads every account and joins your monthly results call. You won't be handed off to a junior account manager.

What access do you need?

Manager access to your Google Business Profile, your website, and read access to lead sources and job status in ServiceTitan or Housecall Pro. If you run ads, access to those accounts too.

Where do you work?

Anywhere in the US. Scans, tracking and fixes are all done remotely, and every engagement starts with a map of your own service area.

Why doesn't my business show up on Google Maps outside my own neighborhood?

Google ranks local results on three things: how close the business is to the person searching, how well the listing matches the search, and how well known the business is. In our October 2026 study of 138 Charlotte-area home service companies, a typical company showed up in Google's top 3 for 70% of residents near its shop, 25% at 3.3 miles and about 1% at 6.7 miles. Distance showed the strongest link in our data, so most companies need Local Services Ads or search ads by ZIP code to show up much past three miles.

Do more Google reviews mean higher rankings?

Up to a point. In the same study, companies with fewer than 50 Google reviews held a median of zero top-3 spots, but past about 150 reviews, more reviews showed no link to how far a company reached. About one in five #1 results went to a business with fewer than 50 reviews close to the searcher. 99% of #1 results had a primary category matching the trade, and 93% of top-3 results were rated 4.5 or higher.

How long does it take to move up on Google Maps?

Profile fixes like categories and service areas often show up within a few weeks. New service and town pages, reviews and links usually take one to three months. We don't promise rankings. We rescan the same grid every month so you can see what moved and what it did to booked jobs.

How much does local marketing cost for a home service company?

Our map scan is free. A one-time Booked-Job Audit is $1,500, credited to your first month if you start within 30 days. The Growth Program is $2,000 a month with a 90-day first term, and $3,000 a month if we also run your Google Ads and Local Services Ads. Ad spend is paid to Google from your own account.
